Abstract
The present article is devoted to the physicochemical characterization of TiO2 nanoparticles, prepared by environmentally friendly green synthesis. The precursor solution consists of titanium isopropoxide and Mentha Spicata (MS) aqueous extract having three different concentrations. It was hydrothermally treated at 150oC in autoclave. The resulting powder was washed and then treated thermally at 400oC. The particles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), Transmission Electron spectroscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). All powders possess pure anatase phase of spherical shape. It has to be noted the effect of the addition of the plant extract for the modification of optical parameters and lattice structure of TiO2 nanoparticles. The number of oxygen vacancies increases, while the band gap values decrease slightly upon the increase of MS concentration. Several signals have been registered in all EPR spectra of the powders, which can be ascribed to the presence of oxygen radicals (g=2.000). When the MS concentration increases, the intensities of the EPR signals, which correspond to oxygen radicals also increase. The proposed by us Mentha Spicata – mediated synthesis is suitable for preparation of biocompatible titanium dioxide materials of defined structure and opical parameters etc., which could be applied in specific areas of medicine, pharmacy, industry, etc.
